Pacal Mask
Description: This is a replica of the original Pacal Mask, that was found under the temple of the inscriptions at Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico where Pacal was buried inside a sarcophagus. Lord Pacal was also known as hand-shield and sun lord Pacal, the most powerful king of Palenque. Pacal became king when he was 12 years old and died at the age of 80 in 683 a. d. the original mosaic mask is life sized and made as well as the replica out of jade, shell and obsidian. The backing of the mask was made out of wood that had rotted away when it was discovered, so it had to be reassembled. In 1985 it was stolen from the museum of anthropology and history of Mexico and recovered in 1988.
