Tikal Funeral Mask
Description: This is a replica of the original Tikal Funeral Jade Mask that was discovered in 1963 inside tomb #160 at Tikal, Peten, Guatemala. The tomb belonged to a Mayan noble and dates from the year 527 a. d. The mask was found broken in 174 pieces and was reassembled a few years later using information obtained from several stelae (stone markers made by the Maya) that had information carved on them about this mask. The original mosaic mask as well as this replica is made out of jadeite, shell, obsidian and serpentine. Due to its importance as a find, an article about this special piece was published in the national geographic magazine of September 1987.
